The classics of science fiction have been outstripped by a history that continues to elicit their warnings of the extermination of the human race by that race itself. Miha Remec's The Barrens is an update of those classics, an inventive and fearless detailed look at a bleak future, horrifically imaginable, in which alienation is the norm on a depopulated, poisoned planet--its characters only vaguely aware that others may exist and fully aware that fecundation is the last value standing. This short novel illustrates the plight of both a man conditioned for a world gone and the women reduced to longing to be kidnaped for the sake of humanity's future.
